About Ella

Where Tea Meets the Sky

Perched at 1,041 metres in Sri Lanka's central highlands, the small village of Ella is one of those rare places that somehow exceeds every expectation. Surrounded on all sides by emerald tea gardens, mist-draped peaks, and plunging valleys, it has become one of the most beloved stops on the Sri Lanka trail — for good reason.

The most famous sight is the Nine Arch Bridge, a magnificent stone viaduct built in 1921 without a single piece of steel, rising from the jungle floor as if conjured from the landscape. Watching a blue train curve across its arches through layers of tea-green hillside is one of the iconic images of Sri Lanka travel. Reaching the bridge requires a short hike through tea estates — which is itself a delight.

Ella also offers two excellent hikes for those wanting more: the relatively easy Little Adam's Peak (2.5km, 360° valley panorama) and the more challenging Ella Rock (6km, stunning ridge views). Tea factory tours, a thundering waterfall at Ravana Falls, and some of the best breakfast cafes on the island round out a village that punches far above its size.

The journey to Ella is almost as memorable as the destination itself: the train from Kandy through the highlands is widely considered one of the world's most beautiful rail routes, weaving through tunnels, over viaducts, and past waterfalls for seven unhurried hours.
