About Kandy

Sacred Capital of the Kandyan Kingdom

Nestled among misty hills at 500 metres above sea level, Kandy is Sri Lanka's cultural heartland — a city that resisted European colonisers for over three centuries and served as the last capital of an unbroken line of Sinhalese kings. Today it is one of the most visited cities in South Asia, drawing pilgrims and travellers alike to its ancient temple, tranquil lake, and world-class botanical gardens.

The Sri Dalada Maligawa — the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — is the city's spiritual centrepiece, housing a tooth of the Buddha that has been venerated for over 1,600 years. Surrounded by moats, the golden-roofed temple complex is a marvel of Kandyan architecture and the site of the grandest festival in Sri Lanka: the Esala Perahera, where the relic is paraded through the city streets each July and August in a spectacle of elephants, dancers, and torchlight.

Beyond the temple, Kandy rewards slow exploration: the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya shelter 4,000 plant species over 150 acres; the evening cultural show brings to life centuries of dance, music, and fire-walking; and the lakeside esplanade offers peaceful walks as mist drifts down from surrounding ridges.
