A crescent of turquoise paradise — where blue whales surface offshore and palm-fringed sands glow at sunset.
About Mirissa
Mirissa is the gem of Sri Lanka's south coast — a crescent-shaped bay of brilliant turquoise water, lined with swaying coconut palms and a gentle curve of golden sand. Small enough to retain a relaxed, village feel yet with excellent restaurants, beach bars, and boutique accommodation, it strikes a near-perfect balance between comfort and escape.
From December to April, Mirissa becomes the launch point for what many consider the world's best whale watching experience. The deep water channel just south of Sri Lanka channels blue whales — the largest animals on earth — close to shore during their annual feeding migration. A three-hour morning boat trip from Mirissa harbour regularly encounters blue whales, sperm whales, dwarf sperm whales, and several species of dolphins including spinner dolphins in vast, leaping pods.
The beach itself is excellent for swimming in the morning and early evening (when the wind is calm), and has a consistent gentle surf break at the western end that is ideal for beginners. Parrot Rock — a small island accessible at low tide — is the sunset spot of choice, offering views back across the bay as the sky turns amber and pink. Mirissa's restaurant scene has grown significantly in recent years, with excellent fresh seafood grills and international kitchens alongside traditional rice and curry.
